LIVE SHELLFISH - 1KG WHEN PACKED - PLEASE ENJOY WITHIN 2 DAYS OF DELIVERY
Winner of the 2020 Great Taste Awards, these blue Cornish mussels are highly sustainable. Grown on ropes and surrounded by clear Cornish waters they make for a meatier mussel than their seabed grown cousins with 1 kilo of them feeding 3-4 people as a main. Juicy and versatile, Cornish mussels are often cooked with shallots in cream and white wine. In Cornwall we love cook them in them in local cider – a delicious treat to try at home! Mussels take just few minutes to cook, usually steamed in a sauce for just enough time for their shells to pop open and reveal tender, orange meat.
How to check your mussels:
They’re packaged in a unique way that reduces stress to the mussels whilst in transit and ensures maximum tenderness and freshness. Most mussel shells will be closed on arrival which is perfectly normal. We recommend you open the packaging and leave your mussels in the fresh air for 10 minutes before rinsing them in clean water (but make sure you don’t leave them to soak in water). After rinsing, be sure to give any open shells a firm tap and check that the shell has closed within a few minutes (alternatively squeeze closed any that are open and they should keep themselves tightly shut). Discard any that don’t close after a few minutes after your tapping/sqeezing checks and any with broken shells. Don’t worry, these packs are stocked with a little extra mussels to allow for the odd discard.Mussels are a great source of important vitamins; with levels of iron and folic acid to rival red meat. Mussels are also a rich source of zinc.

From Fowey, our mussels are grown in the deep, clear, clean waters of the Cornish coast - an area renowned for its water clarity.
All molluscs are depurated to ensure they are full of flavour and safe to eat. Depuration is the process where, over a given period of time (normally 42 hours), shellfish are contained in salt water tanks, with the water pumped over ultraviolet light to reduce any bacteria that may be present within the animal, to the lowest levels possible. This process is monitored by Environmental Health Officers and DEFRA.
