We are thrilled to announce that one of our best filleters - Kevin Byrne - has won the title of Cornish Fishmonger of the Year at this years Newlyn Fish Festival.

Hosted and organised by Seafood Cornwall Training Ltd and supported by Seafish and Passionate about Fish, the Cornish Fishmonger of the Year competition brings together the finest fishmongers from around the country to test their skills and techniques when preparing seafood for a customer.

This year, Wing of St Mawes was proudly represented by Kevin to
compete for the prestigious title. He has been training with Tommy Mooney (our chef) all year, was determined to take home the Cornish Fishmonger of the Year trophy as he came a close second in last years final.

During the competition, Kevin demonstrated his expertise in front of a huge audience and with stood fierce competition in great confidence. Owing to his skills and nerves of steel, he has achieved what he set out to do.

When being asked how he felt to be the winner, Kevin said

"I was really emotional when I was told I had won. I had to fight back the tears...  I was so proud and humble at the prospect of winning this highly sort after award. I just hope more fish filleters across Cornwall will attend next year, so I can once again prove and regain my position as the Cornish fishmonger of the year. Its something I always think about through out the year to improve my skills, so that at the next competition it serves to only be second nature."

Kevin said this is how he would celebrate the success,

"I celebrated with my family and rang Rob Wing to tell him the good news - that's what its all about - people that matter. Oh yes, and proudly putting my trophy on my mantel piece."

Congratulations to Kevin, who become the first filleter to win
a Cornish Fishmonger of the Year title from our team here at Wing of St Mawes.
