Cornish Hake

The great fish debate – Cod versus Hake. Read why it's time to consider swapping your favourite white fish.

Cod has been the white fish of choice in England for years - usually battered and served on a bed of chips with lashings of salt and vinegar. The Welsh, however, have enjoyed Hake for their Friday-night fish order for decades.

So why should you consider Cornish Hake your go-to fish rather than cod?

Cornish Cod is not considered 'sustainable'

Over recent years global warming has encouraged cod to move north in search of cooler climes.

This has put pressure when catching cod and forced a reduction in the catching quota (the weight of fish allowed to be caught)

Cod is now not considered as ‘sustainable’ as it once was.

That's why we don't sell Cornish Cod - all our Cod comes from areas of Europe where their stocks are stronger and more sustainable.

Want to keep it Cornish? You can't go wrong with Hake.

In contrast to Cornish Cod, the catching of Hake in waters around Cornwall has grown in volume year-on-year for nearly two decades.

In addition, a stock management system was introduced 20 years ago to ensure that this delicious fish can be enjoyed for many more years to come.

Today, in Cornwall, there are several fishing boats catching superb, quality hake in the local area. Unlike cod, there is currently an abundance of hake in the South West with strong fishing quotas indicating the on-going sustainability of this fish species.

Many consider Hake to be a superior fish

For those pescatarians mourning the loss of sustainable Cornish Cod, the great news is Hake is often considered a superior fish.

This succulent white fish has a slightly sweeter flavour than cod, is a similar price and can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Hake can be cooked in many ways, not just battered and served with chips! The best way to cook this mouth-watering fish is skin down in hot oil, just be careful not to overcook it. For many years the Spanish have enjoyed this flavoursome fish with Salsa Verde, olive oil and a glass of cold white wine – Hake lends itself well to Mediterranean-style dishes.
